Being the only thing in the market the producer of the serial car with the rotor and piston engine – RX-8 compartment – the Mazda company periodically throws up information which is fairly frightening admirers of rotor units, afraid of that the company can throw development of new generation of engines of this kind and will concentrate on traditional motors, such as the new SKY series. The similar concern almost completely was disseminated few years ago when to Mazda showed the new rotor engine under the name 16X, Taiki created for an experimental concept.
Unfortunately turned out 16X it was not entered in an aggressive policy of the Japanese automaker who has set for a problem of economy of fuel. The management of Mazda planned in medium-term prospect by 2015 to reduce average fuel consumption on all model range for 30 % from level of 2008.
It means that engineers of the company will need still time before the engine of new type will be used in serial models. Communicating last week with reporters on motor show in Tokyo, the head of Mazda R&D Seyta Kanay (Seita Kanai) explained that 16X shows quite good data, but recognized that productivity of a novelty while leaves much to be desired. «The rotor and piston engine 16X while is in a stage of a concept and demands completion», noted Suit.
The unit 16X represents 1,6 l the dual rotor installation similar from 1,3 l by the engine 13B from the RX-8 model. It is characterized by the increased course, the increased working volume (800 cubic cm x 2) and it is considered thermally more effective, than the engine 13В. Besides, 16X it is equipped with technology of direct injection and the superficial aluminum case promoting decrease in fuel consumption.
While it is not known, when the serial version of the engine 16X will appear on public, but it is expected that in 2011 the new generation of the RX-8 sporty coupe will be equipped with such unit.
